Generative AI only becomes operational when it is connected to the systems where work already happens. Standalone chat experiences can demonstrate potential, but enterprise value comes from linking models to business data, identity, workflows, and applications. Gordon Food Service is a strong example. To make AI useful for 7,000 employees, the company needed business context from a wide range of systems, including Google Workspace, ServiceNow, Concur, SAP S/4, JIRA, Confluence, and GitLab. Their deployment shows what enterprise integration really means: AI has to understand the tools, data, and operational context of the organization, not just generate fluent text.
The clearest proof comes when AI is tied directly to a measurable operational process. At KONE, an AI-driven workflow extracts text from documents in SharePoint, validates that data against SAP records, routes deviations for review through Power Apps, and then updates or creates contracts in SAP. Microsoft reports that this workflow processes more than 54,000 contracts per year and reduces handling time from 30 minutes to under 10 minutes per contract. That is not an AI demo. It is a production workflow where generative and document AI capabilities are embedded inside an end-to-end business operation.
Successful enterprise integration also depends on deployment and governance choices, not just model selection. NTT DATA explicitly looked for an agentic AI solution that was fast to deploy, integrated with its existing tech stack, and met enterprise security requirements. Using Microsoft’s stack, it launched services that delivered up to 65% automation in IT service desks and up to 100% automation in some order workflows. The lesson is important: enterprise AI adoption accelerates when the platform supports integration, automation, and security together, instead of forcing teams to stitch them together from scratch.
The platform layer matters because integration complexity grows quickly. Azure AI Foundry Agent Service is positioned around secure enterprise deployment, with support for knowledge sources such as Bing, SharePoint, Microsoft Fabric, and Azure AI Search, plus more than 1,400 action connectors through Azure Logic Apps. Microsoft’s data architecture guidance makes the same point from the data side: agents perform better when they operate on unified, trusted, governed data products, and Microsoft 365 data should remain subject to existing permissions, sensitivity labels, and tenant policies. Enterprise operations need AI that respects existing controls rather than bypassing them.
This is why scalable enterprise AI is as much an integration program as an AI program. The model is only one layer. The durable advantage comes from grounded data, secure connectors, observability, workflow orchestration, and a deployment path that can move from one use case to many. When organizations get that right, generative AI starts to feel less like an isolated capability and more like an operating layer that can support service, contracts, support desks, knowledge work, and decision-making across the business.
